SKOWHEGAN (AP) — A judge is giving a defense attorney more time to prepare for the defense of a former tax collector accused of stealing more than $400,000 from a Maine town.

Claudia Viles pleaded not guilty last month to charges of theft, tampering with public records, failure to make and file state income tax returns and failure to file or pay state income taxes.

The Morning Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/1OZTbtu ) a judge on Wednesday approved her lawyer’s motion requesting to postpone the trial, saying the case, which involves thousands of documents, was not ready.

Viles resigned in September after an Anson administrative assistant found a discrepancy between how much money she said she collected in 2014 and the amount she really collected.

A new trial date has not been set.
