Our program relies greatly on the help of community volunteers to provide the support services of companionship and transportation assistance to lonely and isolated seniors.

Every year at this time, as winter comes upon us, we see an increased demand for our services. Right now on our waiting list there are 15 elderly people, many are in their late 60s to 80s, who live in Auburn, Lewiston, Lisbon Falls, Minot, Poland and the Sabattus areas who are quite lonely and are waiting for friendly visits and transportation assistance from a caring volunteer.

Many of them live alone and have no transportation, so they need help getting to their appointments or picking up their groceries. Having help from a volunteer from their community would mean so much to them. Since many are lonely in the winter months, as they do not get out as much, a friendly visit each week helps to lift their spirits and helps them feel less isolated.

We provide training and ongoing support for our volunteers. If you have three to four hours a week to give to a senior from your community, or would like more information about becoming a volunteer with us, please call our office at 207-784-0157. — With much gratitude, Wendy Russell, program director.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Tommy’s Feral Felines will hold its annual bake sale along with a bottle drive from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 19 and 20, at Chapter 11 on Main Street in Lewiston next to Cumberland Farms and across from Burger King. This is the same location at which Tommy’s fundraisers have been held in recent times, but it used to be Sports Trader and is now Chapter 11.

All of the wonderful treats that will be available do not just appear by elf magic but through the generosity of our wonderful friends who know their way around a kitchen.

So many of us bake for the holiday season anyway, so why not turn out an extra dozen cookies or whatever your specialty is and donate it to an organization that does wonderful work and really needs support. It will give you a warm, holiday glow to know you’ve helped our furry friends weather a long, cold Maine winter.

If you would like to be one of our holiday helpers and supply something yummy for the sale, we would love to hear from you. Oddly enough, cupcakes don’t seem to sell as well as other goodies so we would prefer other treats instead.

Tommy’s Feral Felines is an all-volunteer, no-kill organization which receives no official funding and relies solely on donations and the income generated by its fund-raising events.

For further information or to sign up to supply baked goods, you can contact Norm Blais at 207-240-8767; normblais@yahoo.com; or P.O. Box 274, Greene, ME 04236. — Tommy’s and all of their feral kitties thank you for your help.
