PARIS — The Maine Veterans’ Home Veteran of the Month is former U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Frederick E. Vose Jr.

Vose was born on June 18, 1931, in Marshfield. He grew up in East Machias and graduated from Washington Academy.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in September 1950. He was stationed in many places throughout his enlistment, including South Carolina, Turkey, Alaska, New Jersey, California, Cape Cod, Texas and Florida. He served stateside during the Korean War.

After basic training, he attended air police school in Florida. Upon completion, he was assigned to Donaldson Air Force Base in South Carolina as a member of the Air Force Police Squadron. While stationed in Texas, he was transferred into the Commissary Field as a Procurement Specialist.

While he was at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, he was chosen non-commissioned officer of the week.

He was discharged in October 1970 and earned the Good Conduct Medal.

He worked in the office at a textile mill in Lowell, Mass., and also worked in many clerical positions at Bath Iron Works.

One of his greatest enjoyments is baseball; he likes to follow the Red Sox. While he was stationed at Maguire Air Force base in New Jersey, he met the famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio. 

He enjoyed playing bingo when he lived on the C Unit. Now he is on the B Unit and loves to be taken care of by Dana.

He came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in April 2013.
