FARMINGTON — In continuation of its ongoing Sound Forum, the University of Maine at Farmington presents two innovative concerts featuring orchestral, experimental, wind ensemble, jazz and avant-garde performances.
The UMF Experimental Arts Ensemble is an in-residence student ensemble dedicated to the exploration and performance of experimental music. It will perform works by pioneering figures in the avant-garde music world Pauline Oliveros, Annea Lockwood and others.
The concert includes the world premiere performance of Jonathan Hallstrom’s “R-Motion: Drosera for two pianos and interactive media,” performed by Lily Funahashi and Steven Pane. Hallstrom teaches music theory, composition and directs the multimedia studio at Colby College.
The performance takes place at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 20, in the Performance Space in the UMF Emery Community Arts Center. Admission is free.
The UMF Instrumental Collegium, under the direction of Eric Thomas, will present works for orchestra, wind ensemble and jazz combo. Comprised of community and student instrumentalists, the collegium will present an eclectic mix of music ranging from C.P.E. Bach to the theme music from Sponge Bob to Thelonious Monk.
The performance takes place at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, in Nordica Auditorium in UMF Merrill Hall. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and free for children and UMF students with student I.D.
Thomas is director of Jazz and Wind Ensembles at Colby College, outstanding composer and clarinetist and one of Maine’s most highly-respected musicians. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, and has previously conducted the Phillips Academy Andover Jazz Band, the Phillips Academy Andover Concert Band, and was a conducting assistant to Sarah Caldwell at the Opera Company of Boston. He was a guest at the Bravo! Colorado festival and played clarinet in small chamber ensembles with Eugenia Zukerman and Yolanda Kondanassis
In its short time of existence, the UMF Experimental Arts Ensemble has performed at the Experimental Intermedia in New York City, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Frantasia Festival of Out Music and Arts and the Temple Stream Theatre in Maine. It has also worked with such prominent artists as Stuart Sander Smith, Jaap Blonk, Iancu Dumitrescu and Tomomi Adachi among others.
These events are sponsored by the Office of the UMF Provost; UMF Dept. of Sound, Performance and Visual Inquiry; and the UMF Divisions of Social Science and Business, Natural Science and Humanities; and the Emery Community Arts Center.
