LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine is offering toddler and children’s karate classes this season to encourage physical activity during the upcoming winter months.

Ignite your Little Spark with Toddler Karate! — The Little Sparks Toddler Karate program is designed for children ages two to four. The program combines high energy activities with martial arts training in a fun, safe environment. Little Sparks explore a variety of life skills, including discipline, respect, balance, coordination and more. Classes will take place from 8:30-9 a.m. Saturday mornings Nov. 14 to Jan. 2 in the YWCA Wade Center and are taught by Donna Harris of the Phoenix Karate Academy. Program cost: $50 for YWCA members, $60 for non-members plus an addition uniform fee.

Children’s Karate — The Children’s Karate class curriculum at the YW focuses on providing tools for the child to grow into a strong role model. Phoenix Karate instructors use the dojo precepts of humility, self-control, integrity, courtesy, discipline, perseverance and compassion to remind us of the true meaning of the martial arts. Students are taught that karate starts and ends in self-defense and it should never be used to harm others. They learn the importance of leading by example both in and out of the YWCA/dojo. This program provides the students with non-violent ways to deal with bullying, builds their self-confidence and teaches them to help other children become more confident as well. Classes are held Saturdays from 9-10 a.m. beginning Nov. 14 to Jan. 2. Participants receive one additional class per week at the Phoenix Karate dojo in Auburn. Program cost: $90 for YWCA members, $100 for non-members plus an additional uniform fee

Participants may register in person at 130 East Ave. in Lewiston or by calling 795-4050
