Children’s author to visit Dirigo

PERU — Noted Maine children’s book illustrator and author Josh Alves will visit Dirigo Elementary School Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Throughout the day, Alves will meet with students and their teachers, offering them a glimpse inside the mind of an award-winning artist and writer.

Best known for his illustrations of the “Zeke Meeks” chapter books (14 in all), Alves recently published “Lily Bristol, Dinosaur Wrangler” and has been praised for his interactive book “SURPRISE!”

Parents are invited to the school that evening from 6 to 7 p.m. to meet Alves and visit the book fair.

SMHS parent/teacher conferences

JAY — Report cards for Spruce Mountain High School students were mailed Friday, Nov. 13. Parents asked to call the school to schedule parent/teacher conferences.

The conferences will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 17 and 18.

Stephens High ’48 to meet

RUMFORD — Stephens High School Class of 1948 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at the River Valley Grill.

AllCare to discuss universal health care

RUMFORD — The River Valley Chapter of Maine AllCare will meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Rumford Public Library.

The group will review its first year of activity and growth and discuss its future possibilities and continuing efforts to educate the Maine public about the ethical and economic benefits of a universal state-wide health care plan.

This meeting is open to anyone who is interested in this issue.

SMHS inducting 9 students into NHS

JAY — Spruce Mountain High School will hold a National Honor Society Induction Ceremony to induct nine new members at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in the SMHS library.

Sen. Tom Saviello, R-Wilton, will be the guest speaker.

Seniors to host Christmas party

RUMFORD — The Rumford Senior Citizens Center will host a Christmas Party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at the Rumford American Legion.

Music will be played by Noel Palmer.

Christmas, bake fair in Rumford

PERU — The Rumford Senior Citizens will hold a Christmas and bake fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the old Peru School seniors room on Main Street.

The date has changed from Dec. 5.

Donations and volunteers are needed. The event will help raise money to keep the center running. There will be a basket for food donations.

Homemakers hosting craft fair

WILTON — Wilton Day Homemakers will have its annual Christmas Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at St. Luke’s Church on High Street.

There will be a White Elephant table, basket raffles, a bake sale and crafters. A lunch of soup and sandwiches will be served.

ANDOVER — Andover Elementary School will host its first vendor/craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21.

Eat for Heat Nov. 21

INDUSTRY — Eat for Heat, a public supper that will benefit the FAEM ECU Heating Fund, will serve from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Industry Town Hall.

The meal is sponsored by Shorey Chapel and the Industry Community Kitchen.

Supper will consist of baked ham, mashed potato, vegetables, corned beef boiled dinner, and biscuits and rolls, along with apple crisp and gingerbread with whipped cream for dessert.

Cost is $8 per person.

Church to host Holly Fair

RANGELEY — The Barn of the Rangeley Congregational Church on High Street will hold its annual Holly Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21.

This year’s special feature will be a table of decorative table trees made by church members. Knitted, crocheted, sewn and woven items along with an extensive cookie walk will be offered. Food sale items such as breads, jams, pickles and candies will be sold in the East Room along with specialty items from the RADA cutlery collection. Santa’s Seconds as well as Reindeer Dust round out the offerings.

Once again, the Little Mountain School Moms will provide soups, breads and desserts as a fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The public is welcome.

Methodist Women plan fair

FARMINGTON — The Trinity United Methodist Women of Farmington are busily preparing for their annual Christmas Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Route 2, east of Farmington.

There will be a turkey and biscuit meal with desert served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The fair will offer a wide variety of gifts for all occasions, including Christmas decorations, needlework, knitted goods, handmade gifts, plants and food items like baked goods, candy, jams, jellies and relishes. There will also be the popular cookie walk.

All proceeds from the craft fair will be directed to projects focusing on women and children, the mission emphasis of the United Methodist Women.

Sodality hosting craft fair

NORWAY — St. Catherine’s Sodality will host a Holiday Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, 32 Paris St.

There will be a variety of gift and food items from local crafters, a raffle table, a bake sale and a Trash to Treasure Room.

St. Luke’s taking pie orders

WILTON — St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 59 High St., is now taking Thanksgiving pie sale orders.

Traditional pies such as pumpkin, apple, mincemeat, pecan and berry, custard and chocolate cream pies will be available.

Orders must be placed by Saturday, Nov. 21, and picked up by Wednesday, Nov. 25, between 9 a.m. and noon. Prices range from $9 to $12 for each pie.

Holy Savior Catholic School hosting fair

RUMFORD — The Holy Savior Catholic School will hold a Christmas fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21.

Items for sale will include handmade wreaths and kissing balls, themed Christmas tree raffles, attic treasures, door prizes, holiday crafts, knitted goods, baked goods and children and adult raffles.

The Kids Corner will return with make-and-take crafts. Shoppers can have their pictures taken with Santa from 10 a.m. to noon.

A hot turkey lunch for eat-in or take-out will be served at 10:30 a.m. until it is sold out. The meal is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 62 and older and $5 for kids 10 and younger.
