LEWISTON — The driver of a car that struck and killed a man walking Wednesday evening on Lisbon Street isn’t expected to be charged with a crime, police said.
James Franklin Robert Demetrius, 25, of Chelsea was questioned by police following the incident.
Speed and alcohol don’t appear to be factors for the driver in the incident, Lt. Adam Higgins said Thursday.
Initial reports indicated that Demetrius left the scene without stopping, but Higgins said Demetrius drove up the street to where he could safely park before pulling over. He ran back to assist Norm Rivard, 86, who was lying in the street.
Rivard was pronounced dead at the scene.
An accident reconstruction report is not expected to be complete for several weeks, Higgins said.
Rivard had been tending bar at the nearby Webber Social Club and had been heading home when he was struck at about 5 p.m., friends said.
A nurse had stopped and rendered aid to Rivard before rescue crews arrived.
A section of Lisbon Street had been blocked off to traffic.
