LEWISTON — Described by DownBeat magazine as a maker of “sophisticated, approachable music played with both freedom and discipline,” pianist Frank Carlberg fronts a jazz quintet at Bates College at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

Carlberg, at Bates this academic year as a visiting artist, is known for his musical settings of poetry. In his Bates performance, titled “Word Circus,” he’ll present settings for work by such contemporary American poets as Ron Padgett and Anselm Berrigan. He’ll be accompanied by a quartet including singer Christine Correa.
