JAY — Spruce Mountain High School inducted nine new members into its chapter of the National Honor Society on Nov. 19.

The new members are Camryn Berry, Rylee Delaney, Gunnar Higgins, Mikala Holt, Rylee Moore, Alexa Perkins, Gabrielle Richards, Bryan Riley and Rylee Saunders.

The students are sophomores, juniors and seniors who have been identified by the faculty as having outstanding character, leadership abilities and community service, in addition to a cumulative GPA of 92 or better.

The evening ceremony included a speech by guest speaker state Sen. Tom Saviello, R-Wilton, who reminded the students to thank their parents and families who have helped shape them into model citizens by recognizing them with a flower. Saviello shared quotes and encouraged the students to continue giving back to their community through service. The evening concluded with each new NHS inductee being introduced by a current NHS member.

Projects the NHS members are doing this year include volunteering at the local food bank, visiting a local nursing home and upkeep at the community gardens.

Current members include Trevor Doiron, president, Liesel Krout, vice president, Amber Delaney, secretary, Grace Ryan, treasurer, Brandon Anctil, William Brenner, Matthew Cornelio, Devon Darling, Austin Gilboe and Tad Jewett. Teacher Jessica Ellingwood-Simpson serves as adviser.
