FARMINGTON — As Eryn Doiron prepared for a free kick early in a playoff game against Brewer, the Witches decided to make sure the senior sniper from Mt. Blue wasn’t going to score.
Brewer lined up all 10 players in the wall to defend Doiron and a direct shot on net.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody do that,” Mt. Blue coach Fred Conlogue said. “He didn’t guard anybody else on the team. He wanted us to pass the ball. Eryn did pass it and someone did get a shot off.”
Doiron earned respect this fall both on and off the soccer field for her outstanding season. She broke the school record for career goals while also earning All-Region and KVAC Player of the Year honors. She’d had a great year as junior, but made her senior season a memorable one.
“I had a hope that it would turn out this good,” Doiron said. “I’m a little overwhelmed about it. I couldn’t have asked for more. It was an amazing season.”
Doiron finished the year with 19 goals and three assists. She set the career mark with 50 goals and 19 assists. She was the primary offensive catalyst for the Cougars. Even when she wasn’t scoring herself, her play helped create something for somebody else.
“She had 19 of our 30 goals this season,” Conlogue said. “Every game for us was a tough game and every game was like a playoff atmosphere. They were all tough for us, like 1-0 or 2-0, and Eryn usually had the goals.”
“I definitely wanted to lead the team and I didn’t want to just lead the team but also be like a second coach and help built the program so it will be really strong for next year,” said Doiron, who is also an outstanding basketball and tennis player.
She not only led the team on offense but increased her role by being more vocal and stepping out of her comfort zone. She was a dominant force but also tried to be an unselfish one and work well with her teammates.
“She was willing to sacrifice some offensive chances to help the rest of the team not give up as many opportunities for teams to score,” Conlogue said. “She came back more than she did in previous years. That was really valuable to the team.”
Conlogue says the group of Mt. Blue seniors has been together for a long time in both soccer and basketball. That helped them work together and execute effectively.
“They had a chemistry in finding each other wherever they were” Conlogue said. “I think that really helped her. We were able to get her the ball when we needed to.”
While her stats were record-breaking, it proved to be a wonderful season for both Doiron and her fellow Cougars. Mt. Blue beat higher-seeded Messalonskee in overtime on Senior Night to finish the regular season. Then the Cougars beat Brewer in penalty kicks in the playoffs. Doiron had one of the PK’s. Mt. Blue also won the North A Sportsmanship Banner for the second year in a row.
“My team played incredible and we played high above my expectations,” Doiron said. “They were great. They worked so well together. We had some really nice moments and played some good soccer.”
