“I am greatly interested in your square-naming contest,” said a Lewiston business man to one of the Lewiston Journal reporters, Wednesday. “It seems very proper that there should be a name, other than ‘head of the street’ for this, the very business heart of the city. It has pleased me much to see folks taking such an interest in the matter. Yes, I have sent in a couple of suggestions myself.” It is surprising how many people have become interested in this contest. It has not been confined to Lewiston and Auburn, for replies have been received from all sections of New England. These have come from men and women who formerly lived here, or who are frequent visitors to the city.

A discussion meeting between the Lewiston Planning Board and representatives of the Wilbur-Smith Associates Tuesday night resulted in an expression of opinions with no action taken. The Planning Board had originally proposed a circumferential highway that would circle the city in back of Thorncrag with a third bridge to be located in the Upper Main Street areas. However, the consulting firm chose, as more feasible, a highway closer to the center of the city, one that would circle around through the Garcelon area on through the Russell Street vicinity and cross the river at Boxer Island.

Thirty Greene residents Wednesday took advantage of a call-in show on cable television to get answers to questions involving their town government. The Cable TV Committee sponsored the two-hour program, which allowed townspeople to direct questions to a panel of town officials. The show was aired on local cable Channel 4. The panel fielded questions on a wide-range of subjects including the town’s fledgling recycling program, rural patrol in conjunction with the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department, the town’s junkyard ordinances, assessing and a possible change in the hours of the town landfill.
