1949 – 2015
PORTLAND — Larry R. Mooar, 66, of Portland died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 27, in Portland.
Larry was born in Farmington on May 14, 1949, the only child of Richard “Shorty” and Gwen (Macomber) Mooar. He attended schools in Farmington, graduating high school in 1967, and went on to attend the University of Maine at Farmington for two years.
Larry entered the U.S. Army in 1970, completing basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. He went on to receive advanced training at Fort Gordon, Ga., and completed an extended tour in Vietnam. Larry was honorably discharged in 1972.
He lived in Lewiston from 1975 to 1984. He attended the Hanson’s Barber School and Mansfield Beauty Academy, obtaining both his barber and cosmetology licenses. He continued on to receive his barber and cosmetology instructor licenses. He also worked at The Homestead Restaurant.
In 1984, he moved to Portland, where he opened his own barbershop/salon called Snips. It was there that he did his craft for many years. He had a longstanding client base who supported him well over 22 years. Throughout his career, he taught for Hanson’s Barber School, Mansfield, Pierre’s, Cosmotech, and Bernard’s of Lewiston.
He is survived by his aunts and uncles, Alvin McDonald and his wife, Kitty, of Wilton, and Norman Macomber of Tinton Falls, N.J.; special friends, Dan Cyr of Lewiston, and Terry King and Winnie Moody; and many cousins and other friends.
He was predeceased by his parents.
