MaineHealth, the state’s largest health care system, is partnering with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to provide local patients with “streamlined access” to specialty cancer care and clinical trials through the Boston facility.

The agreement includes 11 MaineHealth member and affiliated hospitals. St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston is among them.

According to a statement released Wednesday, Dana-Farber will provide consultation, training and other services throughout the MaineHealth system. MaineHealth and Dana-Farber will also work together to expand or develop a wide range of initiatives to be offered by MaineHealth.

The agreement creates a continuum of care, with many treatments provided at local hospitals, more complex cases addressed at Maine Medical Center in Portland and most complex and challenging cases receiving advanced treatments and clinical trials through Dana-Farber.

“As a MaineHealth affiliate . . . we will reap the benefits of this partnership through improved access, streamlined care, enhanced communication, and access to clinician expertise,” St. Mary’s President Christopher A. Chekouras said. “This partnership is a definite ‘win’ for our patients and our community.”
