Amid all the paranoia about immigration of people who happen to be Muslim, it is nice to see something positive coming from Lewiston-Auburn — the community I called home in my early years.

There is the stunning video on Facebook about that winning Lewiston High School soccer team and the way Coach Mike McGraw helped his players bridge a racial gap — and probably teach some lessons to their elders in the process.

There are the signs going up in shop windows along Lisbon Street telling the world that hate does not belong here.

No doubt about it: Lewiston is making history. The setting for two novels that I know of; articles in The New Yorker and other national publications; plus Catherine Betseman’s “Making Refuge,” due out in February.

People are hearing a lot of hate speech these days, much of it coming from politicians, one of whom could make it to the oval office in November.

Thanks, Lewiston-Auburn, for helping to balance the scales a bit.
