BETHEL — MSAD44 Continuing Education will offer several courses beginning in January 2016.
Beginner fiddling: For those who wish to learn to play the fiddle, starting out with a simple tune and then exploring ways to enhance it. The class will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. beginning Tuesday, Jan. 12, for six weeks at Telstar High School, room 133, with instructor Paul Cormier. The cost is $160. There must be four students minimum for the class to be held with a maximum of five.
Beginning ukulele class: Participants should bring a ukulele and a curiosity to learn how to use it. Chord playing, music reading and singing and playing will be covered. It will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Telstar High School, room 218. The instructor will be Simon Smith. Cost is $45. Class maximum is eight students.
Beginning guitar class: Students will cover chord-playing and will be singing and playing. Students must bring a guitar and curiosity about learning how to use it from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Telstar High School, room 218. The instructor will be Simon Smith. Cost is $45. Maximum is six students.
Polite puppy/young dog training: Open to puppies and young dogs from 12 weeks up to 1 year. Participants will learn positive methods for training a puppy to politely greet people and other dogs, loose leash walking, sit, down, stay and some tricks. This class is based on the AKC Star Puppy syllabus. Puppies should be wearing a regular flat buckle collar and 4- to 6-foot leash, not choke chains or prong collars. Handlers should bring 2 to 3 cups of small, soft treats (small pieces of cheese, hot dogs, liver, purchased soft treats). A clicker will be supplied. This class is not suitable for reactive dogs. Baker is a graduate and certified training partner of Karen Pryor Academy, specializing in positive training methods. Voice lessons: For people with a love of singing but no formal training, this class will cover healthy use of the voice, singing solo songs and some choral music and music reading. The class will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday, Jan. 13, for six weeks at Telstar High School, room 218. The instructor will be Simon Smith. Cost is $45.
Sight singing for the struggling singer: For those who have wanted to join community or church choirs but cannot read music, this course will teach note reading and work pronunciation in several languages through choral singing. The class runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Telstar High School, room 218, with instructor Simon Smith. The cost is $45, and the maximum number of students is 12.
Exploring African drumming: For students with access to a hand drum (a table or bucket will do in a pinch), this course will deal with how to turn rhythm into music, the basic tenets of West African drumming and how to play and think in new rhythmic ways. It will run from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Telstar High School, room 218. The instructor will be Simon Smith. The cost is $45, and the maximum is 10 students.
Guitar II: This class is a continuation of the beginner class for those with little guitar experience. Chord playing, music reading, singing and playing and finger picking will be covered. The class will be held from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Telstar High School, room 218. Instructor will be Simon Smith. Cost is $45.
Woodworking: This class is for beginners who want to learn more about woodworking as well as for expert woodworkers. This is a six-week course where participants can build small or big. The first week will be an informational session talking about machinery safety and what to expect in this class. Participants decide what they would like to make, then come back the next week with whatever wood is needed for the project. Tools are supplied. The class will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. for six weeks beginning Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Telstar High School, room 220. The instructor will be Tim O’Connor, and the cost is $65.
