LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus Education Center has announced its January 2016 class schedule. Classes are held at 8 Falcon Road. Registration is required to participate. 

Victoria Wyeth — Great Stories of Her Grandfather, Andrew: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4, with instructor Victoria Wyeth, visiting scholar at Bates College. Wyeth will talk about the work of her grandfather, Andrew Wyeth, showing paintings that cover his entire career, from his first drawings as a 6-year-old child to his final painting at the age of 91. She’ll also share some fun family stories.

Jazzed on Java — Roasting and Brewing Coffee: 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, with instructor John Chick, coffee lover. Participants will try samples of freshly brewed coffee from around the world. Chick will talk about coffee from its humble beginnings in the western mountains of Ethiopia through its propagation around the world, to become the second most traded commodity on the planet, and perhaps the single most important agricultural export of many developing countries. He’ll discuss where it comes from, how it’s grown, harvested, processed and shipped.

Living Well ’til the End (new series): 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, with instructor: Dr. Elizabeth Keene of St. Mary’s Hospital. This month’s topic will be “My Gift of Grace.” Death. Participants will try playing a card game that helps talk about death and dying — a difficult topic for many. The game is designed to help participants prepare themselves (and those close to them) for life’s endings and to live lives with greater grace and resilience.

A One-on-One, One-Hour Class — Researching Your Family History: Date choices are Tuesdays, Jan. 12, 19 or 26, with time choices of 9 a.m., 10:15 a.m., noon or 1:15 p.m. The instructor will be Carroll Holmes, researcher. Holmes will use several genealogical web sites to find people on participants’ family trees. If possible, those attending should bring family historical information (names, dates and places).

Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body — Tips from the Latest Research: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, with instructor Mark Pechenik, director of Community Engagement and Outreach, Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter. Participants will learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement and use hands-on tools to help incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging.

Integrative Medicine — What Is It?: 10 to 11: 30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, with instructor Dr. Anne Brown, Internist, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. Participants will learn about a new field of medicine called integrative medicine: What are its principles and how is it different from traditional medicine?

Sleep Issues as We Age: 10 to 11: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, with instructor Dr. Richard Kahn, pulmonologist, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. Sleep … how do people do it? Dr. Kahn, an expert in the field of sleep medicine, will share his knowledge. And, he’s ready for questions. 

Do Seniors Need Courage?: 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, with instructor Marguerite Stapleton of Wisdom Works. Cost is $3 for supplies. Sometimes it helps to recognize what people have already learned, and perhaps, build on that. One of Marguerite’s favorite quotes is: “Every horizon upon being reached reveals another.”

Hearing and Aging: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, with instructor Dr. Ashlee Harrington Vandiver, audiologist. Vandiver will discuss the typical onset of hearing loss, patterns associated with age-related hearing loss and common symptoms.

Maine Author Series: This class is also offered at the West Paris Public Library and Western Maine Community Action in Wilton via Web-Ex; registration is required by calling 207-795-4010. Author Kendall Morse will discuss his book “Father Fell Down the Well” from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28. “Father Fell Down the Well” is a collection of traditional Downeast stories collected and performed by Kendall during a career of performing in Maine and across America. Morse is also a former folksinger (three times voted Folksinger of the Year by the Maine Country Music Association, inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame in 1995 and was nominated for a Grammy in 2009), and public television host in the 1970s on “In the Kitchen.”

Travel — Mt. Sinai and Petra: from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, with instructor Alan Elze, retired, All-Round Informed Delight. Mt. Sinai and Petra are places that are rarely heard about except in movies, but both places do exist, and they’re both in the Middle East. Participants will journey with Elze through time and space via a slide presentation, visiting Mt. Sinai in the Sinai Peninsula and Petra, Jordan.

Ongoing classes

Gentle Morning Chair Yoga for Seniors: 9 to 10 a.m., Mondays through Jan. 25. There will not be class on Jan. 18. The instructor is Tisha Bremner. The class is designed to increase vitality, gain a deeper sense of balance and find inner calm, combining meditation, easy warm-ups, light stretches and gentle yoga postures. The cost is $8 per class, a drop-in rate.

Advanced Strength and Balance Training: 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Mondays. There will not be class Jan. 18. The instructor is Linn Morin, a certified trainer. Participants will move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase coordination, muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support. Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Aetna, Humana, United) may pay tuition. The cost is $3 for one class per week. FMI: 207-523-9055.

Beginners Strength and Balance Training: 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays with instructor Linn Morin, a certified trainer. Ther will not be class Monday, Jan. 18.  These on-going, twice-a-week classes are designed to improve participants’ quality of life as they move to music while increasing strength and balance. Participants may stand or sit. Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Aetna, Humana, United) may pay tuition. The cost is $3 for one class per week and $5 for any two classes per week. FMI: 207-523-9055.
