LIVERMORE FALLS — Two domestic ducks have another chance at life, thanks to the trained eye of a Livermore Falls police officer.
Officer Devon Bohacik was patrolling Souther Road on Tuesday night when he spotted two black bumps in the road, Officer Michael Pina said Thursday.
Bohacik stopped and found what was first thought to be two geese huddled on the road. They appeared to have been ruffled up and ice was building up on their wings, Pina said.
Lt. Joseph Sage and Officer Connor Willard arrived with a cage and helped Bohacik corral the birds. They were taken to the Livermore Falls Police Department.
Officers were unsure what was wrong with them, Pina said. One appeared to have a wound on its back. They also found they had rescued Muscovy ducks, not geese, Pina said.
A game warden picked up the birds Wednesday morning, and Pina thought they had been taken to Avian Haven in Freedom for rehabilitation, but a worker said they were not there.
Later Thursday, Game Warden Dave Chabot said the ducks were fine, safe, warm and being fed. Apparently, another warden who has appropriate facilities was taking care of them until someone claimed ownership.
