100 years ago, 1915
A rescript in the case of E. P. Webster vs. The Postal Telegraph & Cable Co., has been handed down from the law court in which the decision favors the defendant company. The case grew out of an alleged mistake by the company in the transmission of a message from Lewiston to Moline, Ill. By the mistake which changed the word “Tuesday” to “Thursday’,” Mr. Webster was put to the loss of time and expense of a trip from Lewiston to Moline. The case was tried before a jury in the Androscoggin county S. J. court last January and a verdict of $106.50 was returned for the plaintiff.

50 years ago, 1965
Lewiston city officials revealed today “hopes” of seeing the vacant Raytheon building back into operation, on the heels of reports that a large firm has shown some interest in the former electronic plant. Lewiston Mayor Robert L. Couturier and Louis Sarelas, director of the city’s Economic Development Department, jointly reported they are “extremely hopeful” that Radio Corporation of America may take over the building which has been vacant nearly two years, “As I had said last week in another news story, Lewiston is on the eve of a bright future,” Mayor Couturier informed the Journal today.

25 years ago, 1990
The city is seeking national certification for its new historic preservation ordinance, a move that would make Lewiston eligible for some federal grants and professional assistance in designated historic districts. The ordinance defines local historic districts and sets standards for renovations being made to buildings designated as historic structures or located within a designated historic district. Lewiston Housing/Community Development Planner Sylvia Hudson said the ordinance has been revised to change the standards on historic preservation to match those laid out by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
