FARMINGTON — A homeless man from Norway faces charges after entering an unoccupied motel room without registering, police said.

Chris Barnard, 65, was arrested Tuesday on charges of burglary and unauthorized use of property after police found him sleeping in a room at Mt. Blue Motel on Routes 2 and 4 in Farmington, Deputy Police Chief Shane Cote said.

Barnard appeared before Judge Nancy Carlson on Wednesday morning by video from the Franklin County jail to Rumford District Court. Barnard intends to plead not guilty to the charges, Luann Calcagni, his court-appointed attorney, told the judge.

Cote said the motel owner told police the former occupant of the room left Sunday and dropped the key into a locked box. When the room appeared to be locked from the inside, the motel owner thought the occupant had stayed on. But, after the owner spoke to the occupant, Farmington Police Officer William Tanner was called to check on the room Tuesday afternoon and found Barnard.

The room key was found in the room. Barnard told police he found the door open and went in for a warm place to sleep, according to court files. He also told police he was homeless and had been asked to leave the Western Maine Homeless Outreach, a shelter half a mile west of the motel, Cote said.

Bail was set at $150. Assistant District Attorney Joshua Robbins asked that Barnard not return to Mt. Blue Motel as part of his bail conditions.

Barnard has a history of this, Robbins told the judge.

Barnard remains at Franklin County Detention Center.
