FRYEBURG — It took three rescue attempts to bring a stranded dog from the thin ice of Lovewell Pond in Fryeburg on Thursday morning.

Chappy, a 2-year-old Weimaraner, wandered out onto the ice and couldn’t get back to shore. That’s when a Lovewell Pond resident — who was hosting a visit by Chappy and its owner — used an ocean kayak to reach the dog. But he and Chappy became stranded.

Chappy’s owner tried the second rescue attempt but fell through the ice. She was able to get herself out of the water. She called 911 when she got to shore.

Fryeburg emergency officials responded and rescued the adult male and Chappy. Both adults were treated by medical staff, but were not transported to a hospital.

“We are pleased this story had a happy ending for both Chappy and its adult rescuers,” Fryeburg Police Chief Joshua Potvin wrote in a news release. “Many dogs are attracted to water and depend on their owners for keeping them safe during thin ice conditions.”

“We are reminding the public to use caution when they are near frozen bodies of water,” Potvin said.
