The state’s last few Christmas bird counts were held over the weekend, with most reporting fewer winter finches and lower numbers both of species and of individual birds than last year. On the far-north Misery Township count, conducted Saturday by Farmington’s Western Maine Audubon Society with participation from the Auburn-based Stanton Bird Club, 14 counters found an all-time low of just 16 species, down from 24 last year. A sleet storm on count day may have affected the totals by keeping birds under
cover and counters from penetrating some of the remoter parts of the 15-mile count circle, reachable only on foot or jeep trails. To reach some parts of the 144-acre census area, counters drove over ice-glazed logging roads to trail heads, then donned cross-country skis and braved the sleet to reach habitat known to be promising for north woods species.
