1936 – 2015
AUBURN — David Doble Lunt, of New Gloucester, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 26, with his two daughters by his side.
He was born in the dining room of his family home in Falmouth on Sept. 7, 1936, to William and Janet Lunt II, the eldest of three children.
David graduated from Falmouth High School in 1954 and from Gorham State Teacher’s College in 1958. He worked in education for 26 years. The majority of those years were spent at Greely Junior High in Cumberland as an eighth-grade English teacher. He was a well-loved teacher, with a unique teaching style, and was especially known for his “gum box.” He had a special fondness for what he called his “dirty dozen,” a group of students who did not like school. David found a way to meet their needs and help them succeed with alternative teaching methods.
After retiring from teaching, he tried his hand at construction, working full time for his longtime friend, N.G. Bailey. After that, he put his heart and soul into working as a career counselor for displaced workers at Western Maine Community Action. When it was finally time to retire from full-time work, he worked part time for many years at Cook’s Hardware in Gray, where he enjoyed engaging his customers and sharing his knowledge of home projects.
In so-called retirement, David dedicated many hours to the town of New Gloucester, serving on the Board of Selectmen, the Safety Committee and the New Gloucester Fair Committee. He also worked with others to facilitate the purchase of the property now known as the New Gloucester Fairgrounds and was a fervent advocate for the funds to build the new fire station. Dave also worked at the county level on the BAC, the Charter Commission and the Cumberland County Community Development program. He was well respected for his ability to be thoughtful and reasonable.
David loved his children and grandchildren. He cherished his childhood and loved to share stories of his adventures and antics. He was skilled at “chewing the fat” and truly enjoyed talking about everything. He was, without a doubt, a kind and gentle man. He will be deeply missed.
David is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Rogers and her husband, Chris, and Elizabeth Ray and her husband, Tony, all of New Gloucester; his four grandchildren, Nick and Ben Rogers, and Charlotte and Calvin Ray; his brother, “Brother Bill” Lunt and wife, Ginny, of Falmouth; and many nieces and nephews.
Dave was predeceased by his sister, Linda “Sister Woman” Leotsakos.
