1924 – 2015

NEW GLOUCESTER — Fred W. Colby, of New Gloucester, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, at his home.

Fred was born in South Paris on July 3, 1924, the son of George A. Colby and Alice (Curtis) Colby.

Fred’s life devotion and commitment was to proclaiming the gospel of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. As a young man, his dream was to preach and to serve in the mission field. His service was to small communities in New England, mostly Maine as a pastor, youth leader and Bible study facilitator. Later in life, he was able to work with Wycliffe Bible Translators in an administrative role. Even after the age of retirement, he continued working so that he could financially support missionaries and in Bible translations. Rev. 14:6 “… having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him …”.

Fred is survived by two sisters, Pricilla Carne of Simpsonville, S.C., and Dorothy Tibbets of Oxford; by three sons, George Colby Sr., David Colby and Calvin Colby; four daughters, Jana Clum, Karen Storman, Deborah Pastro and Claudia Norton; 25 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Robert Colby.
