1928 – 2016

SABATTUS — Kenneth C. Spencer, 87, of Sabattus, died at home Monday, Jan. 4.

He was born in Sabattus on July 6, 1928, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Spencer. He was educated in Sabattus schools.

He entered the U.S. Army the day after graduation, where he served in the military police with the occupation forces in Japan.

He married Margarite Rancourt in October 1951. He worked for the Department of Transportation driving truck for 30 years. After retiring from the state of Maine, he drove truck for Harry C. Crooker.

He volunteered for the Sabattus Fire Department for many years. He was an avid stock car driver who was inducted into the Maine motorsports hall of fame in 2009. He also enjoyed camping with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Margarite (Olivette) of 64 years; his sister, Esther Rhode of Florida; his brother, Norman of Wilton; his three daughters, Debbie Shaw and husband, Sonny, of Orrington, Diane Johnson of Seattle, Wash., and Robin Spencer of Gardiner; four grandchildren, Matthew Gould, Michael Johnson, Season Jones and Seth Tremble; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, one sister and three brothers.
