100 years ago, 1916
The first matinee of the ice-racing season on the river speedway is scheduled for 1:30 o’clock, today, under the auspices of the Lewiston and Auburn Driving Club. The horsemen recently held their annual meeting and indications point to a season of unusual interest. The Androscoggin speedway has been placed in first class condition and with it fast track underfoot and fair skies overhead, the opener should prove a big boost to the sport.

50 years ago, 1966
A howling northeaster belted the Twin Cities with nearly a foot of snow Saturday night, with high winds whipping up drifts three and four feet deep, paralyzing plows as well as passenger cars. Sunday morning dawned bright and clear, but stiff breezes continued to pile the light snow into drifts. Highway departments had worked round the clock to break out streets, and they were preparing to take to the roads again Sunday night after a brief rest period. At the height of the blizzard, motorists were brought to a standstill, and many cars were abandoned when they could go no further.

25 years ago, 1991
The Naval Air Station at Brunswick is undergoing another review by the Department of Defense that could result in it being closed within six years as part of budget-cutting moves, officials said. “It goes back and forth daily,” said Capt. Mike Wilson, commanding officer of the air station. “One day I’m encouraged, the next day those hopes are dashed. Wilson said his staff is recommending that Brunswick be kept open in its official position before an independent commission reviewing military bases for possible closure in the United States and abroad. The base serves as headquarters for six squadrons of P-3 Orion aircraft, which conduct anti-submarine warfare patrols over the north Atlantic Ocean under the command of the admiral based in Topsham at Patrol Wings Atlantic.
