1920 – 2016
NORWAY — Stanley W. Frost, 95, of South Paris, died on Monday, Jan. 4, at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, following a brief illness.
He was born in Norway on Dec. 3, 1920, to Eva (Richardson) and Theodore Frost. He was a graduate of Norway High School, Class of 1939 and a 1947 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono.
As a Norway native growing up, he was active in the local Boy Scout troop and became an Eagle Scout. He participated in performances at the Norway Opera House while in high school and played football and ran track for Norway High School. He was a member of Oxford Lodge No. 18 AF & AM.
His education was interrupted by World War II. He served in the Pacific as a company commander in the 170th Combat Engineer Battalion participating in the battles of Leyte and Okinawa. After the war ended, his battalion was sent to Korea as occupational troops. He was relieved from active duty in June 1946. He completed his forestry degree and moved to Calais where he worked as superintendent of Maine land operations for what became Georgia Pacific.
He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Calais serving as Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday school teacher and later as treasurer of the church. He was active in Cub and Boy Scouts and served as an elected official of the Calais City Council and school board. He relocated to South Paris in 2002 and was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Norway.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Charles B. and Joan H. Frost of Paris, Dr. Michael A. and Barbara Frost of Cumberland Center; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet F. and Alan Manuel of Chester, N.H.; as well as grandchildren, Dr. David T. Frost and wife, Sharon, and great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Lydian and Kirsten of Belgrade; Garrick A Frost and wife, Samantha, and great-grandchildren, Anna, Grant, William and Oakleigh of South Paris; Jackson E. Frost and wife, Alexandra, of Nortmoor, Germany; Kimberly (Frost) Lessard and husband, Ethan, and great-grandchildren, Acadia and Jack of East Kingston, N.H.; Lindsay (Frost) Jenkins and husband, Trevor, and great-grandchildren Zachery and Emily of Wells,; Gregory D. Frost and fiancée, Laura Catanella of North Quincy, Mass.; Deborah (Manuel) Guevarez and husband, Ralph, and great-grandson, Andrew of Londonderry, N.H.; one sister, Virginia Waldron of Fishkill, N.Y.; stepson, the Rev Dr. Richard E. Barbour Jr. and wife, Diane, of Leesburg, Fla.; stepdaughter, Cornelia Zerbel and husband, Arthur, of Leesburg, Fla.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 55 years, Carolyn (Dusty) Rhoads in 1999; his second wife of eight years, Madge (Rhoads) Frost in 2012; and his brother, Robert V. Frost, of Wellesley, Mass.
