PERU — The Regional School Unit 10 board accepted the resignations of two longtime staff members Monday night.

They also heard a presentation by students in the Lego League from Buckfield Junior-Senior High School.

Christopher Decker, principal at Rumford Elementary School, will retire at the end of this school. Decker was an assistant principal at Mountain Valley High School in Rumford and has worked in the district for 36 years.

Elaine Michaud, a physical education instructor and coach at the Rumford high school, will retire after more than 30 years. Michaud has sung at many events in the region.

A third resignation was presented by Steve LaPointe, who has coached varsity football at Mountain Valley High School for years. LaPointe will remain with the district.

Linda Andrews, teacher of gifted and talented students at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School, presented the school’s Lego League students, making a case for switching from Styrofoam lunch dishes to paperboard plates to reduce waste.

Although the proposed paperboard plates cost 12 cents, compared to Styrofoam ones that cost about 2 cents each, the students said the higher cost ones are made in Maine and can be composted.

The board thanked the students for their research but did not take any action on a potential change, which would cost the district about $7,200 more a year.

“I imagine that (cost) could be brought down by not having to dispose of Styrofoam,” Rumford board member Brad Gallant said.

Nutrition director Jeanne LaPointe said no Maine vendors stock the paperboard plates at this time.

In other matters, Ashley Dyer was appointed as Mountain Valley Middle School assistant winter cheering coach, and Jessica Casey was transferred from Meroby Elementary School interventionist to a special education teaching position at Meroby.
