LEWISTON — Maine Attorney General Janet Mills will address the Great Falls Forum on “A Week in the Life of a Maine Attorney General” at noon Thursday, Jan. 21, in Callahan Hall, Lewiston Public Library.

In December 2008, Mills was elected by the joint convention of the Legislature to be Maine’s 55th attorney general, the first woman to serve in that post in Maine.

She was not attorney general for 2011-12, but was once again elected to the position in December 2012 and has since been re-elected to another two-year term, which began last year.

As Maine’s chief law enforcement officer, Mills represents the state in legal matters ranging from child support enforcement, civil rights and consumer protection to the prosecution of homicides, felony drug cases and major frauds.

She was born and raised in Farmington and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston and a law degree from the University of Maine School of Law.

Mills served as the first female district attorney in New England beginning in 1980 when she was elected to serve in that role for Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties, a position to which she was re-elected three times. Her extensive resume also includes service as a state representative in the Legislature.

In her role as attorney general, Mills has tackled a wide range of issues, including domestic violence, heroin and opiate abuse, and the protection of elders in Maine. She serves on the Criminal Law, Substance Abuse and the Energy and Environment Committees of the National Association of Attorneys General and was recently appointed co-chair of the NAAG Tobacco Committee.

In her presentation, Mills is expected to address legal issues facing her office and the state.

The Great Falls Forum is a monthly, brown-bag speaker series featuring statewide and regional leaders in public policy, business, academia and the arts.

The program is free, open to the public and no reservations are needed. Coffee, tea and bottled water are provided for a donation at the event.

The Forum is co-sponsored by the Sun Journal, Bates College and the Lewiston Public Library.
