LEWISTON — Imagine “Sex and the City” on a golf course as The Public Theatre chases away the winter blues with the New England premiere of the smart and sassy comedy, “The Ladies Foursome,” playing Jan. 22 to Jan. 31.

This entertaining comedy centers on three friends who gather together to play a final round of golf in honor of their recently deceased fourth partner and close friend. Joined by an unknown friend of the deceased, these four women banter, tease and tee off about love, sex, motherhood and careers, learning about themselves and each other as they celebrate the bonds of friendship that link women together.

Written by Canadian playwright Norm Foster, (often referred to as the Canadian Neil Simon), this fast-paced comedy, filled with belly laughs and touching moments, will appeal not only to women and golfers, but to anyone with friends.

“The Ladies Foursome”  is directed by Judith Ivey, Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award winner for her Broadway performances in “Steaming” and “Hurlyburly.” Ivey is well-known for her numerous roles on stage, in film and on television, including reoccurring roles on “Will and Grace” and “Designing Women.” Her directing credits include numerous regional and off-Broadway theaters. The witty cast for this comedy includes Brigitte Viellieu-Davis as Connie, (a promiscuous television news anchor), Tarah Flanagan as Tate (a stay-at-home mom married to a surgeon), Janet Mitchko as Margot, (a divorced workaholic who runs a construction company) and Caralyn Kozlowski as Dory, the “new” fourth. The indoor golf course where the play takes place is designed by Kit Mayer, lighting by Bart Garvey and golf attire by Jonna Klaiber.

The Public Theatre continues its Play Pal program for people who love going to the theater but who can’t always find someone to go with, connecting solo theater-goers with other solo theater-lovers. The theater will be combining its Play Pal program with its newly added 7:30 p.m. Wine-Down Thursday performance on Jan. 28, which includes a free pre-show wine-tasting starting at 6:30 p.m., hosted by Rails Restaurant. This free pre-show meet-and-mingle for the entire audience is a great way to make new friends or socialize with the ones with whom you will be attending the theater.

Performances of “The Ladies Foursome” are Jan 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, 30, 31. Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Fridays, 8 p.m. Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, with an added matinee at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30. Adults, $20; group rate (10+) $17 each.
