FARMINGTON — Millenarians, those who anticipate the imminent Second Coming of Christ, have historically been made up of people lacking power, money and influence in this life. They looked forward to the time when the roles would be reversed, and they would live with Christ during his millennial reign — to the exclusion of all others.
Rob Lively, dean emeritus at the University of Maine at Farmington, discovered a cache of private documents of a religious group in 19th century England who didn’t seem to fit that profile. The Catholic Apostolic Church was made up of members of Parliament, the landed gentry and even some of the aristocracy.
Lively will discuss his collection at the January meeting of the Shiretown Bookers at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, in Room C23 in the Roberts Learning Center at UMF. Some of the documents will be available for examination, and the public is welcome.
The Shiretown Bookers, the community friends of Mantor Library, are a group of collectors and book lovers who provide exhibitions and lectures throughout the year with the goal of fostering the relationship between the university and the community.
Roberts Learning Center, 270 Main St., is the brick building nearest Abbott Park. Room C23 is just inside the right-hand front door.
