PERU — The Maine Department of Transportation is considering lowering the speed limit on certain sections of Greenwoods Road, selectmen were told at their meeting Monday.

Chairman Larry Snowman said an MDOT official spent four days assessing traffic and clocking vehicle speeds on the road.

“About 100 people went by, and after going through the data, he proposed dropping the speed on one section of the road from 35 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour, and extending that section for two-tenths of a mile,” Snowman said. “He also proposed changing another section from 45 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour.”

Selectman Jim Pulsifer said the speed limit is not the problem.

“It’s the people driving and speeding that are causing problems,” he said. “There’s no reason that Greenwoods Road needs a lower speed limit. There’s not that many people on it as it is.”

Snowman said he sees people running, walking, jogging or biking on the road on any given day.

“I don’t even drive 45 miles per hour on that road because I feel like it’s too fast,” Snowman said. “I drive under the speed limit. We’ve also got to remember that we had people come to us and ask to look into the speed limit on that road.”

Snowman said the MDOT official offered to meet with the board and answer any questions.

Pulsifer said he favored a face-to-face meeting.
