AUGUSTA — Finding any imperfections in Lewiston High School’s high-energy routine at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A and B Cheering Championships seemed impossible — except to the trained eye.

The Blue Devils’ demonstrative performance made a large crowd at the Augusta Civic Center sit up and take notice Monday.

Lewiston’s show-stopping act was good enough to earn the KVAC title with 83.8 points, followed by runner-up Oxford Hills with 76.6 points.

But whatever you do, don’t use the word perfect around Lewiston coach Lysa Laverdierre, who believes there is always room for improvement.

“It wasn’t flawless,” Laverdierre said. “Definitely lots of areas of improvements, but I think we are happy a win is a win. We’ll take it.

“I think the girls are in a really in good place. We had a lot of fun today. It’s fun for them to interact with other teams. They are really happy with themselves.”

“I think we have a lot things in the routine that are very difficult that we strive to make perfect,” Lewiston senior Olivia Bergeron said. “I think a lot things went on that we know we need to do better.

“We are always willing to do better We know we have to do better the next time.”

Lewiston senior Sierra Melanson said fine-tuning the Devils’ act is always a good idea.

“I think we had a few flaws, but I think we were together as a team. I mean that’s what we have to do to win,” Melanson said. “We have to keep improving to win.”

Lewiston’s electrifying performance was a stunner, but Meagan Murphy said the Blue Devils will still have to make some adjustments before regionals.

“It feels really good to be hitting today,” Murphy said. “We made a lot of energy, but we need to do better, but if we don’t, it is hard to get everything around.”

That kind of can-do attitude has brought the Blue Devils a KVAC championship since 2009.

Mt. Blue finished fourth with 64.4 points and Edward Little came in ninth with 49.1 points.

The Vikings not only took second place, but were presented with the Jamie Beth Shible Award for most improved team in Class A. The award is given in memory of Shible, who died suddenly in 1997. She was a co-captain of the Mt. Blue cheering team. In Class B, Medomak Valley received the award in Monday’s event.

“It feels really, really good,” Oxford Hills cheering coach Deb Loveless, who was grateful to see her team earn the award, said. “The Shibles are just wonderful people. I have been here a long time with them and was here when their daughter passed away.”

But Loveless was equally impressed with her Vikings, who put on quite a show.

“They were very energized once they knew things were going (their way), they would just stick with it,” Loveless said. “Lewiston is — they are phenomenal. We just kept working on the little things and just kept telling them to improve what they did before, and keep working towards it, and that’s what they kept doing.”
