1931 – 2016

FARMINGTON — Aurelien J. Couture, 84, a resident of Jay, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, at Sandy River Center in Farmington.

He was born July 8, 1931, in Jay, the son of Rosaire and Anaise (Shink) Couture. Aurelien graduated from Jay High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On April 13, 1953, he married Shirley Davis at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. Aurelien worked as a wood yard crane operator for International Paper Co. for 38 years, retiring in 1987. He was also the custodian at St. Rose of Lima Church and rectory and a sexton for Holy Cross Cemetery. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, a member of the International Paper Company Quarter Century Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree and a life member at Lane Dube AMVETS Post No. 33. Aurelien enjoyed woodworking and was a jack-of-all-trades.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Macdonald and her husband, Brad, of Jackman; two sons, Larry Couture and his wife, Lisa, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Darryl Couture and his wife, Kristi, of Jay; four grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Jillian, Jordan and Austin Couture; brothers, Athanase and Gilles Couture; sisters, Marguerite Slovak, Blanche Bilodeau, Muriel Desjardins, Georgette Sutton, Grace Hodge, Patricia Couture and Sister Mary Martha Couture.

He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Couture, in 2012; brothers, Toussainte, Emmanuel and Placide Couture; sisters, Ange Marie Couture, Cecile Dupont and Carmel Garneau.
