PORTLAND — Dr. Angela Gleason will present a talk titled “Living in the Margins: Early Irish Scribes and Their Manuscripts” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Maine Irish Heritage Center, 34 Gray St.

Early Irish scribes, copying the ancient manuscripts that led author Thomas Cahill to claim that “the Irish saved civilization,” wrote personal comments in the margins of their work. Attendees will discover how these comments opened a window into the lives and deepest thoughts of the authors of the comments.

Gleason is from Union and is assistant director of Specialized and Interdisciplinary Language Programs at Yale University.

Her talk is the third in the Karen Lemke Memorial Lecture Series, presented annually by the St. Joseph’s College Cultural Affairs Committee in partnership with the Maine Irish Heritage Center.

Admission is $5 and is free for Maine Irish Heritage Center members and the St. Joseph’s College community.
