Over the next several months the slate Department of Environmental Protection will be reviewing two applications that, if approved, will lead to a substantial expansion in the city’s retail base. Tim Bruce, a spokesman for Equity Properties, owner of the Auburn Mall, said Friday the company is looking for the necessary environmental approvals needed for a 186,000- square-foot expansion announced in 1989. Bruce said plans for the Auburn Mall call for adding one major department store, but he declined to be specific, saying the developers are “still looking and talking to several prospects.” He also said the expansion would likely hold 15 to 20 additional mall shops.
