1929 – 2016

NORWAY — John Marlin Longley, 86, of Casco, died on Saturday, Jan. 23, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

John was born in Norway, on Nov. 28, 1929, to Forrest and Nancy Longley. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine where he was Tau Beta Pi (the second-oldest American Academic Honors Society); he obtained his master’s degree in sanitary engineering from the University of Illinois.

He was the owner of L.M Longley & Sons Hardware Store. John lived in Norway for his entire life; at the age of 4 he helped with chores at L.M. Longley & Sons, eventually becoming a master plumber, master electrician and master of heating and cooling, worked eight years for Allis-Chalmers, served two years in the U.S. Army and returned to L.M. Longley & Sons.

John was devoted to his town and over the years held office in most of the town’s civic organizations. Examples: presided over Norway water district, Norway zoning board, zoning appeals board and soil and water conservation. He was a Norway Bank conservator and a volunteer fireman.

Along with his cherished wife, Caroline, he leaves his brother, Charles of Norway; sons, Jonathan of South Paris, and Fred of Wisconsin; four grandchildren; and three stepdaughters, Georgine, Cathy and Caroline.
