LEWISTON — Bishop Robert P. Deeley will celebrate a special Mass to close the Year of Consecrated Life in the Diocese of Portland at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, in the lower chapel of the Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul on 122 Ash St.

All in consecrated life and those wishing to join in honoring the witness of the women and men of the various communities in the diocese are encouraged to attend.

With the theme “Wake Up the World,” the Year of Consecrated Life began on the First Sunday of Advent, Nov. 29, 2014, and will conclude on Feb. 2, World Day of Consecrated Life. The year was a celebration of the gifts and blessings that those in consecrated life bring to the Church and the world, and it also offered an opportunity to learn about the many forms of consecrated life. In the Diocese of Portland, that includes religious sisters and brothers, associations of the faithful, hermitesses and hermits, consecrated virgins and secular institutes.

“Our Church in Maine has been touched by the many women and men in consecrated life who have offered prayers for the people of the diocese in monastic chapels and ministered to all in education, healthcare, social services, pastoral ministry, and religious education within parishes, healthcare facilities, schools and social service agencies,” said Bishop Deeley. “In the commitment of those in consecrated life to follow Christ more closely, we all learn. Each of us, I think, can think of ways in which we have been enriched by the life and mission of a person living in consecrated life.”

During the year, the diocese honored those in consecrated life in many ways: special events to recognize members of consecrated life were held in Waterville, Lewiston, and Scarborough, featuring a Mass celebrated by Bishop Deeley and a luncheon; all parishes in Maine offered special intercessions during Masses for those in consecrated life; many parishes organized special events to recognize the importance of consecrated life to the history and ministry of the diocese; and Harvest, the diocesan magazine, highlighted members of consecrated life with one or more stories about their contributions in each issue.
