1928 – 2016

LACONIA, N.H. — Richard L. Smith, 87, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, N.H. He was a resident of the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, N.H.

Richard grew up and spent most of the early part of his life in Rumford and then lived in Manchester, N.H., for over 40 years. He was born in Rumford, on Aug. 24, 1928, the son of Manetta Lovejoy O’Hanley.

Richard worked as an electrician for Demers Electric in Rumford, Snow’s Electric in Auburn, LeBlanc Electric in Manchester, N.H., and ended his employment as a custodian at Amherst Middle School in Amherst, N.H.

Richard was a member of the 82nd Airborne stationed in Fort Benning, Ga., and also in Fort Myer, Va. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. In addition, he loved to ski, spend time with his mother and family in Maine, and time with his companion, Priscilla, which included many hours of dancing to big band music, fishing with John, Katelyn and Lindsey, and visiting with Tom, Bob and Lori at their homes and at the lake.

Richard is survived by Thomas Nerbonne of Barre, Mass., Robert Nerbonne of Sanborton, N.H., and Lori Nerbonne, who were like his own children. In addition, John, Katelyn and Lindsey Nerbonne who were like grandchildren to him. Richard is also survived by his special cousins, James MacPhee and his wife, Joan, of Bath, Barbara MacPhee Wyman and her husband, George, of Brunswick, Sally MacPhee Fiske of Nova Scotia, Canada, and Judith MacPhee Reindl of Brunswick; and many other cousins.

He was predeceased by his mother; and his stepfather, Alexander O’Hanley. He was also predeceased by his companion of 38 years, Priscilla Nerbonne.
