1929 – 2016

BINGHAM — Dassie M. Jackson, 86, of East Madison, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 7, at Somerset Rehabilitation & Living Center in Bingham.

She was born in Norridgewock on Nov. 30, 1929, to Roy and Edith (Hunnewell) Andrews. Dassie graduated from Solon High School with the Class of 1947 and from Farmington State Teachers College in 1952. On Aug. 30, 1952, Dassie married Alfred E. Jackson Jr. in Madison. Dassie taught school for 26 years, starting in a one-room schoolhouse in East Madison for several years and later at Madison Elementary School. She also enjoyed farming with her husband; they raised Hereford cattle. During the haying season, she would operate the John Deere farm tractor. Dassie and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada. In 1987, they took a five-week vacation to drive to Alaska.

She was a charter member of the East Madison Historical Association and was instrumental in its origin. She was also a member of the Maine Old Cemetery Association, the Daughters of the American Revolution in Madison and the Maine Retired Teachers Association. Dassie was also very involved in studying genealogy.

Dassie is survived by her husband of 63 years, Alfred E. Jackson Jr. of East Madison; her daughter, Judith Sarapus of South Portland; a grandson, Jonathan J. Sarapus of South Portland; her brother, Adber Andrews and his wife, Marry, of Solon; her sisters, Audrey Hewett of Sidney and Dawn Groen of Minnesota; many nieces and nephews.
