The city of Lewiston has announced that the pay-per-throw trash bag program needs to make the taxpayers feel comfortable with a savings on real estate taxes, estimated to be between $66-$99 per year. But those same taxpayers would have to buy at least one bag per week at the cost of $2 per bag. Doing the math — one bag per week at $2 per week — means the total cost would be $104.
The city of Portland, which has had a similar program in place for a few years, has recently raised the price to $2.75 per bag.
The mayor of the city of Auburn and members of the City Council will be taking a long look at that program and it might help sway them from supporting the consolidation of the two cities that is still in the planning stage,
