1929 – 2016
AUBURN — Pauline P. “Polly” McDougald, 86, of Old Lewiston Road, North Monmouth, died on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice in Auburn.
She was born in North Monmouth on March 5, 1929, the daughter of Frank and Valeria (Piela) Plossay.
Polly attended North Monmouth School, Monmouth Center School and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1947. While in high school, Polly worked for Earl Norcross who sold a variety of products including cars, trucks, boats and motors from his house and barn on Main Street in Winthrop. In 1975, Polly went to work for the Monmouth Town Office where she worked for 19 years until 1994, when she retired to become a selectman. While at the Town Office, she served as deputy town clerk, deputy treasurer and interim town manager. As a selectman for 20 years (1994 – 2014), she was chairman of the board and a trustee of Cumston Hall. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Monmouth Federal Credit union for more than 20 years.
Polly married Holson McDougald on Jan. 1, 1949. They were often seen around town walking hand in hand with Holson dutifully holding her purse.
She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Holson McDougald of North Monmouth; two daughters, Suzanne Whynott and her husband, Robert, of Barnstable, Mass., and Victoria Scott and her husband, 1st Sgt. Darryl R. Scott, U.S. Army (Retired) of Fountain, Colo.; a brother, William Plossay and his wife, Gladys, of Nobleboro; four grandchildren, Stephen Whynott and his wife, Jessica, Michael Whynott and his wife, Amanda, Erik Scott and Megan Scott; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Alyson and Olivia Whynott; two special sisters-in-law, Sylvia Plossay of Lewiston and Velma Bellville of Winthrop; also several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Thomas McDougald, in 1974; and a brother, Edward F. Plossay, in 2015.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, especially Helen, Esther and Terri for the excellent care given to Polly during her stay there.
