WILTON — Police officers have started a new program, Wilton Bucket Helpers, to ensure safety for those unable to go to the public sand pile.

“I’ve been to several incidents where people have fallen on the ice trying to get to their mail or newspaper and received serious injuries,” Police Chief Heidi Wilcox, said in a statement.

The town allows residents to get buckets of sand for their properties.

Wilton Hardware Store donated 5-gallon plastic buckets for the officers to use. Store manager Jessie Sawyer was eager to get involved, Wilcox said.

“My hopes are that the police can get sand to some of these residents, and when they run out of sand, we can refill the buckets for them,” Wilcox said.
