FREEPORT — Like a good fireworks display, the Freeport FebFest of Arts & Culture is gearing up for a spectacular finish, packed with a week of events in many genres of the arts.

The final week of FebFest includes 17 workshops, performances and screenings, in a variety of genres, including music, film, theater, fine art, culinary arts and history. Among these events are family-friendly concerts and opportunities for people to express their own creativity.

Many of the events are free or pay-what-you-want, making the arts accessible to everyone.

The schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, Feb. 23

FebFest’s grand finale begins Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Freeport Community Center with the Cabin Fever Film Fest, presented by Freeport Conservation Trust. The event features short films on conservation topics, including “1,000 Feet & Below,” about Maine’s smaller ski areas.

Coastal Winds and the Pine Tree Academy Band will perform a pops concert that evening at 7 p.m. in the Pine Tree Academy gymnasium.

Wednesday, Feb. 24

The fun continues Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. as Freeport Creative Arts presents: Urban Sketchers group. The group meets weekly at Coffee By Design in the L.L. Bean flagship store. It’s a free event and participants should bring their own materials.

From 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Bow Street Market, RSU 5 presents “Identifying Wines in Blind Tasting.” The event is $29 ($34 non-RSU 5) and allows participants to gain a better understanding of classic pairings, and develop theoretic knowledge of many wines by tasting with a purpose.  

From 6:30-8:30 p.m. the Freeport Historical Society presents “Meet Millie,” a one-woman show telling the story of the last resident of Pettengill Farm.  The show, starring Trish Scott, will take place at the Harrington House and is $5 for the general public and $3 for Freeport Historical Society members and children 12 and under.

Thursday, Feb. 25

“Celebrating Citrus,” a culinary event presented by RSU 5 will be held at the Freeport Community Center Kitchen from 6-8:30 p.m. The instructor will be Christine Burns-Rudalevige and the event is $39 ($44 non-RSU 5).

From 6:30-8:30 p.m. RSU 5 presents “Getting Comfortable On Stage & Off,” a program geared towards helping people become more comfortable and confident as actors and presenters. It is $15, ($20 non-RSU 5) and will take place at Freeport High School in room 103. 

“Out of the Machinery,” the student-written one-act play presented by Freeport High School’s Drama Department, premieres at Freeport Performing Arts Center. The play was the department’s entry in this year’s Maine Principals Association One-Act Festival. The play is from 7-8 and admission is $5.

Friday, Feb. 26

From 7-8 p.m. at the L.L. Bean camping department atrium, a lecture on Benedict Arnold’s march to Quebec with Colby College professor Bruce Reuger, presented by L.L. Bean’s Outdoor Discovery School.  

From 6:30-7:30 at the Freeport Library, Freeport poet Walter Skold presents “Stories and readings from the Poemobile.”

A second performance of “Out Of The Machinery” will take place at 7 p.m. at the Freeport Performing Arts Center.

Saturday, Feb. 27

An afternoon performance by the Pine Tree Academy Bell Ringers at First Parish Congregational Church. The concert is from 3-4 p.m. and admission is free.

The Greater Freeport Community Chorus Cabaret at the Maine Coast Waldorf School at 7 p.m.  Reservations are recommended.  

From 7-8 p.m., Open Stage Coffee House at Freeport Library. Admission is free. 

At 7 p.m., a final performance of “Out Of The Machinery” at the Freeport performing arts center.

Sunday, Feb. 28

At the Freeport Library from 2-4 p.m. there will be a “Music Jam-Along.” Admission is free and listeners, singers, and musicians of all levels are welcome. 

Monday, Feb. 29

A screening of the 2016 Maine Short Film Festival will be held from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Freeport Library, including a discussion with several of the filmmakers. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for Maine Film & Video Association members.
