1923 – 2016
LEWISTON — Donald E. Conant, 92, of Lewiston passed away at his home on the afternoon of Thursday, Feb. 18.
He was born in Lewiston on April 12, 1923, a son of the late Frederick and Ruth (Berry) Conant. He grew up in the local area and attended local schools. He was a graduate of Edward Little High School, Class of 1940.
Shortly after high school, Donald married Eleanor Nelson on Sept. 4, 1942, in Winthrop and the two started a family together. During that time, Don was enlisted in the U.S. Army and served proudly during World War II and was extremely proud of his service in the 1019th Treadway Bridge Engineers Company. After the military, he worked for Hahnel Bros. for more than 60 years before he retired in his 80s. He had been promoted to vice president of sheet metal for several years before he retired. Also during that time, he taught sheet metal classes for Adult Education at Lewiston High School for many years.
Don was a member and past master of the Ancient Brothers Lodge No. 178 for more than 50 years. He also loved playing golf, cribbage, gardening and woodworking. He would oftentimes make his family special gifts with his own hands and had woodworking skills that were deemed “priceless” by members of his family.
He is survived by his four children, Peter and his wife, Jean, of Lewiston, Donna Gibbs of Lewiston, Del and his wife, Chris, of Auburn, and Scott and his wife, Debbie, of Damariscotta. He also leaves behind a brother, Bruce and his wife, Judy, of California; as well as seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, with a ninth to arrive this summer; and five great-great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Eleanor Conant; a daughter, Lianne; a great-grandson, Erik; and two brothers, Roger and Richard.
