AUBURN — Androscoggin County is entering its sixth month without a register of probate.
The position has been vacant since Brian Bolduc mysteriously resigned last fall. The Democrat served less than a year after winning election in November 2014.
County officials are awaiting Gov. Paul LePage to appoint a replacement. The Androscoggin County Democratic Committee has submitted two names for LePage’s consideration.
Under state law, the party of the outgoing elected official submits a list of candidates to the governor, who makes the final decision.
Asked if he has heard anything from the governor’s office, Androscoggin County Administrator Larry Post said, “Not a single word.”
Androscoggin County Democrats met in early December and submitted to the governor’s office the name of the only person who expressed interest in the position. Tom Reynolds, chairman of the Androscoggin County Democratic Committee, said he received a response from LePage’s office, seeking more names.
According to Reynolds, the governor’s office said state statute required county officials to submit more than one name.
“He said he can’t make a choice with one name,” Reynolds said.
The Androscoggin County Democrats met again and forwarded a second candidate to the governor’s office.
Reynolds refused to identify the two candidates.
LePage is awaiting the candidates to submit resumes and complete required paperwork with the Secretary of State’s office before making an appointment, Reynolds said.
The governor’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
Bolduc, a former legislator from Auburn, received 54 percent of the vote to defeat Joanna Said of Livermore in November 2014. Serving less than nine months in office, Bolduc submitted a one-sentence letter of resignation last October, which said, “Please (accept) this letter as my formal notice of resignation from Androscoggin County as the Register of Probate.”
Bolduc has never responded to messages seeking comment on why he resigned.
The part-time job, an administrative role working with Judge of Probate Michael Dubois, a Republican, pays $17,000 a year.
Deputy Register of Probate Julie Bertrand and probate clerk Sandra Potvin have managed the probate office since Bolduc’s departure.
“The two ladies there are just absolutely fabulous,” Post said. “They are going above and beyond and making sure everything gets done.”
Despite their extra efforts, Post hopes the vacancy gets filled soon.
“It is putting a strain on them to be functioning without the necessary assistance,” he said.
