BETHEL – The Bethel Historical Society will team up with the Greenwood Historical Society to publish an annotated and illustrated book based on the writings of Addison Emery Verrill, a Greenwood native and zoologist born in 1839.

Randall Bennett, executive director of the Bethel society, said Verrill recorded many of his memories about “the early history, natural resources, social life, and genealogy of Greenwood … in a series of more than two dozen articles for a local paper.”

The book will contain “rare photographs and maps provided by Verrill descendants,” and is being edited by Herb Adams of Portland and Larry Glatz of Scarborough.

The formatting and layout will be done by Will Chapman, a member of the Greenwood Historical Society and a librarian and archivist at the Bethel Historical Society, Bennett said.

The book is expected to be available in time for Greenwood’s official bicentennial celebration in mid-August.

“After publication, it will also be available at the Bethel Historical Society’s museum shop and on our website,” Bennett said.

Anyone who wants to donate money toward the project will be recognized in the book’s acknowledgements section, he said.
