Hundreds of children rushed to City Hall at the close of school yesterday afternoon for the program which had been arranged for “Brothers and Sisters” day of Child Welfare week. At quarter to four the hall was packed, every seat being taken on the floor and in the gallery, and scores of children more standing. The number was certainly gratifying, but unfortunately the teachers did not come as was expected and there was so much confusion, that only a part of the program planned was given.

Auburn’s third largest taxpayer may be planning a plant in Lewiston but Herbert C. Lee of Belmont, Mass., president of Clark Shoe Co., said late Thursday night he has no comment at the present time. Lee said that if there is any statement to be made he would do so later. It is understood that negotiations have been underway for space in the former Continental Mills property but that as yet no final contract for space has been signed.

A volunteer effort to track sources of pollutants feeding into Taylor Pond in Auburn will get under way within the next several weeks as more than a dozen residents map trouble spots leading to a drop in water quality. The pond “is at a very critical stage right now. It’s very delicately balanced,” said David Gould, president of the Taylor Pond Association, a group of homeowners living around the pond. The project involves a massive survey of the 15-square mile Taylor Pond watershed, the area of mostly higher land extending into Minot that sends rainwater and melting snow into Lapham and Hodgkins brooks, two streams that feed the pond. Volunteers plan to walk through the watershed looking for signs of soil erosion, poorly constructed roads or badly maintained ditches that could increase the amount of sediment flowing into Taylor Pond.
