GRINNELL, Iowa — Sophomore Sally Ceesay became Bates College’s first All-American triple jumper since 1985 on Saturday, placing eighth at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Ceesay matched the school record she set last year for the second time this season, soaring 11.75 meters, or 38 feet and 6.75 inches, on her second attempt of the day, and did not improve upon that the rest of the way despite three additional attempts of 11.36 meters or better.

UMF splits with UMPI

ORONO — University of Maine at Farmington softball (1-1) opened the 2016 season with a doubleheader split with the University of Maine at Presque Isle (1-1) in non-conference action on Saturday in the Mahaney Dome.

In the first game, the Beavers used 10 hits to secure the 12-4 win. Tasha DeRoche gave UMF a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a home run to left field. DeRoche plated Kylie Cunningham after Cunningham started the inning off with a double in the right field gap.

Kailyn Hill earned her first-career complete game in her first collegiate start for UMF. Hill yielded one earned run on three hits and struck out seven Owls.

No. 4 Amherst 14, No. 6 Bates 9

AMHERST, Mass. — Quinn Moroney scored a pair of goals and dished out eight assists, and No. 4 nationally ranked Amherst College scored five unanswered goals in the third quarter en route to a 14-9 victory over the No. 6 Bates men’s lacrosse team in Saturday afternoon’s NESCAC game at Pratt Field.

In a back-and-forth first quarter, Moroney got Amherst (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) an early 1-0 lead when he fired in an unassisted marker at the 10:46 mark. Bates (4-1, 1-1 NESCAC) answered with back-to-back strikes from junior Charlie Fay.

Kane Haffey scored on a dish from Moroney at the 4:43 mark, and with just 12 seconds remaining in the period, Brett Inglesby scored to give Amherst a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, Amherst extended its lead to 5-2 as Dylan Park and Connor Sheehan scored following a pair of assists from Moroney. Sheehan’s strike came on an extra-man opportunity.

Bates rallied, scoring five goals in the final 9:07 of the half. Sophomore Clarke Jones  delivered an unassisted goal, while senior Jack Allard  and Breschi each scored on the man advantage. Junior Jake Walsh and Allard notched the assists on the goals.
