100 years ago, 1916
A dove that wondered into the corridor of the Lewiston post office early Sunday morning was found peacefully roosting on a radiator. How the bird managed to get inside without injury from the revolving doors is an unsolved mystery.

Franco-American supporters of the arts on Tuesday night “bowled over” a representative of the Maine Arts Commission with ideas to attract grant money to the Twin Cities. “I was absolutely bowled over by the number of people who showed up and by the broad representation of the Franco-American community as well as by the wonderful ideas,” said David Cadigan of the Maine Arts Commission. Representatives from the state Arts Commission have been meeting with Franco-American groups and others since they received the NEA guidelines in late January. Cadigan said the guidelines for the grant proposal are so broad that not only did he need to hear of specific ideas, he was also searching for ideas for a general focus. “We really need your input,” he said. “I feel what definitely must be done is to isolate and evaluate ethnicity as an American treasure,” said Raoul Pinette. Suggestions included rehabilitating the Grand Trunk Railroad Depot to a museum, reinstituting the Franco-American Festival, organizing a team of French-speaking people, developing a statewide network of Franco organizations, introducing the Franco culture in local schools and creating and preserving tapes and videos of Franco music and dance,
