1923 – 2016

SOUTH PARIS — Roger F. Obie, 92, passed away at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris on Wednesday, March 9, after struggling with Alzheimer’s disease.

Roger was born in Auburn on Nov. 12, 1923, to Thomas J. and Annie (Mercier) Obie. Roger graduated from Walton High School in Auburn and spent most of his spare time playing sports which he loved very much.

After high school, Roger worked on Liberty ships being built in South Portland for World War II. He soon joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served as a radio man 3rd Class until the war ended. He was a lifelong lover of big band music which he had the pleasure of experiencing live in New York City during the early forties when his ship was in port. Roger had several jobs during his working career, but spent the most time as a hand sewer in various shoe shops and working for Commercial Welding in Portland.

Roger loved the Lord first and spent his life doing the best he could with what he had and never complaining about tough times. He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who had the opportunity to know him and share his kindness and good nature.

He is survived by his children, Paul Obie and his wife, Sharon, of South Portland, Ronald Obie of Lewiston and Ann Busemeyer and her husband, Michael, of Cincinnati, Ohio. He also leaves behind his loving sisters, Helen, Antoinette and Irene; grandchildren, Tamra Lambert and her husband, Greg, Brandon Obie and his wife, Kristiana, Justin Obie, and Matthew, Katie and Ben Busemeyer; along with his great-grandchildren, Kaelyn and Addison Obie, and Jaxon and Annabella Lambert; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
